June 16, Houston HotCut: Jerry Remy Calls the Game for Boston.

I got word today at 7:21 central daylight:  Houston HotCut.  Boston and Drew Pomeranz head to Minute Maid Park in Houston to face Mike Fiers and the Astros.  Pomeranz, featured in two 'Cuts in April, is 3-1 over the last thirty days with a 3.42 ERA and 1.41 WHIP.  Fiers has slightly better stats over the last month:  3-1 record with a 2.48 ER and a 1.31 WHIP.

Mad Dog, Deep-Sixed

I heard RiZzo homer to lead off a third straight game.  Then the umps decided on second thought it was a foul ball.  Maddon was tossed.  The Cubs still did some damage in PNC against Trevor Williams and his Rag Tag Band.

On the television via Roku via MLB.TV we saw Wieters tweet one off of Matz, only for Michael A Taylor to make it back-to-back jacks.  With two out Matz deals to Ryan Raburn, who made a nice sliding catch on a fly that fittin' to land in the very corner of left field.  Raburn, backwards looking K.  Commercial break in progress.  Hyundai, Verizon on a rooftop, Cardinals mower.  Papa's in the house.

Trashing In-Game Adverts

A description of what uniforms the Cubs were wearing was sponsored by Benjamin Moore, the Berkshire-owned paint company.  Berkshire has bought a ton of MLB ad space: Geico runs one of their smarmy game show-style spots during just about every single MLB audio half-inning break;  Ben Moore has the Cubs uniforms; Dairy Queen runs ads on MLB.TV.  When I do my broadcasting ranks later this year I will assess a heavy penalty for broadcasts laden with these in-game ad lice.  The Yankees are tossing out sponsors for a multitude of game events: first strike, first walk, first visit to the mound, first Judge at-bat.  It's a cavalcade, John and Suzyn are clearly weary of it, and it cheapens their broadcast.  The Cardinals broadcast touts anything ownership can get paid to shill.  What Cubs broadcast is complete without a reminder that You Won't Strike Out with Gold Coast Bank?  Because the Cubs really need the extra cash to cover their broadcasting costs.  If I owned a team, and was making a decent profit as I assume all of these teams are, I would care much more about the aesthetics of the radio broadcast than these teams appear to do.

OK, let's talk ball again.  ScherZer to Céspedes.  Pop-out, 6.  ScherZer is the Nolan Ryan of his time: drop and drive, throw it through a wall, get the out, repeat.  Sweat, spin, throw.

Matz has Harper 0-and-2.  Low and away.  Middle away, 2-and-2.  Up and away, full.  A curve over and Harper sends a soft liner to center, 1B.  Zimmermann, a squibber.  Matz fields and fires, 1-3.  Strong glove action by Matz.

Toothpick sighting!

Murphy, 6, on  soft hump-back line-out.  From the kitchen word of McCutchen picked off by Eddie Butler on a reviewed play.  Tony Rendon, in the hole, two out.  Count goes 1-and-2, mound visit.  Rendon punches through.  Bryce doesn't try to score but Céspedes floats a crazy toss over third, to the brick Citi Field backstop, second and third with two outs.  Wieters.  He hits it well, but 8.

Jerry Remy

Jerry Remy is doing this 'Cut for Boston TV.  I thought my dad had sent me a link to a story stating that Remy's cancer was back and that he was going to have to re-start his treatment.  I am surprised to see and hear him on this broadcast from Texas.  "Baahhness...."

Springer slams his helmet into the rack.  "Astros Win You Win Gallery Furniture."  Altuve doubles down the right-field line.  Correa comes to bat with one out.  He has two singles.  Dave O'Brien describes Barnes as "very deliberate".  Now it's 3-and-0.  Bellinger swung on 3-and-0 earlier today, almost doing damage to Tim Adleman.  Correa walks.  Physical damage I mean.  It was a liner back up the middle.  Adleman got glove on it, one of the infielders got the ball and threw to first and got Bellinger.

Altuve breaks for third, Vázquez's throw hits Evan Gattis's bat.  Gattis had swung, you see.  It's not a foul ball.  O'Brien references that Rangers - Blue Jays playoff game from just a couple years back where a bat—Shin Soo Choo's?—was hit by a non-pitched ball.

Barnes gets a double play ground ball and the inning is over.
