August 22, KC HotCut: An Ichiro Cameo and Stanton XLVI.

I am listening to Marlins at Phillies.  It is tied at three, top six, two out, Aaron Nola on the mound.  Nola gets Derek Dietrich on a breaking ball and the Phillies will bat.  I have heard one bit and one piece of this game.  I heard the Stanton laser double that tied the game three-up.  It was Stanton's 98th RBI, putting him second on that list in the National League (Nolan Arenado has 105).

Ichiro Makes My Day

Ichiro will pinch-hit for Dan Straily.  Nola is in trouble, top seven.  This is the first game of a doubleheader.  Ben Davis "will join us for game two of this twin bill."  I take that to mean Larry Andersen will not provide color on the second game.  I am also assuming this is the Ben Davis who used to catch and wielded the bat behind one of the most infamous bunts in baseball history.

Ichiro is hitting .243.  Ichiro homers!  Oh man, this is why I do this.  It's a 3-run, pinch-hit home run for Ichiro Suzuki.  Straily struck out ten, allowed only two hits, both of which left the park.

Stanton XLVI

And then Giancarlo Stanton hit his 46th home run.  Wow.  Nola id done.  That was RBI number 99 for Stanton.  He has now hit the most home runs by a Marlin in any calendar month (13), and it is only August 22nd.  He broke the mark previously achieved by himself (four times including this July) and once by Dan Uggla.

Nola's line looks like:  6 1/3 IP, 9 H, 7 ER, 2 BB, 7 K, 2 HR.  That's a game score of 30.

Ozuna Joins In

Jesen Therrien enters the game for the Phillies.  He is a native of Montreal, Quebec.  He debuted in the majors on July 29th.  And he quickly yields the third home run of the inning, this one by Marcell Ozuna.  The only game in town has suddenly become a rout, the Marlins with a 9-3 advantage.  Realmuto goes 5-3.

Today's Slate

Let's take a look at the slate.  I have a feeling I am not going to catch much of the later action but there are seven games starting early in the 18:00 hour.  Specifically, there are two at 18:05 (at Pittsburgh, at Baltimore).  And five at 18:10 (at the Mets, at Cleveland, at Cincinnati, at Detroit, and at Tampa Bay).

Bridge Check

Tommy Joseph doubles a ball off the tip of Ozuna's glove in left center, snapping an 0-for-18 skid.  It's Hyun Soo Kim time.

This game is in the bottom of the seventh.  It looks possible that it could bridge the slate until the 18:05 action.  There are 14 outs to go, which need to take 37 minutes.  That's calls for at least 2.64 minutes per out, a pace that would put an entire game at a mere two hours and 22 minutes.  A bridge is therefore very possible, all the more so with the hometown Phillies trailing.

Here We Go Phillies, Here We Go...

The Phillies have scored a run.  There was some commotion outside and I got distracted so I'm unsure how that run scored.  The crowd at this game is sparse to the point where one loud person in the audience, positioned fortuitously, can get their voice recorded clearly on and through the broadcast.  There is an adolescent doing the "Here we go Phillies, here we go...."  Over and over.  That's all for the seventh.

Geico: Ad Nauseam

God, I'm so sick of these two Geico commercials—"What color is the White House?" and "Daddy, Where Do Babies Come From?"  I've been listening to them at the end of just about every half inning of every radio game for months.  They are boring into my brain like sick prehistoric worms seeking to mine my soul.
