August 9, Arizona HotCut.

High off another Cardinal win you were up with the Oregon juncos dishing the headline at 5:23 Pacific daylight:  Arizona HotCut.

Day Baseball Catches Me Napping

At 11:33 I realized baseball had begun at 11:10, twenty-three minutes of day baseball down the drain.  I turned on Rockies at Indians, SenZatela and Bauer.  I heard Amarista homer, his third.  Then a Lindor homer put Cleveland ahead, 2-1.  There is one other game under way, Rangers at Mets, where it's 4-0 Texas in the top of the fourth.

Blackmon now.  He's grounded out in each of his first two trips to the plate.  4-3.  Bauer goes 3-up, 3-down in the top of the fifth.

Tom Hamilton Woke Me Up

I took a siesta that spanned a couple of innings.  It's hard to get too deep into a sleep when Tom Hamilton is on your radio.  It's still 2-1 Tribe, now in the bottom of the eighth.

Bridge check.  Rangers at Mets is 5-1 Rangers, bottom seven.  That game will probably still be going when this Indians game is over (unless the Rox tie it and there are extras).  But stipulate for the purpose of exercise that Rangers-Mets is the bridge hope.  There are 12 outs to go.  Mariners at A's begins in 53 minutes so the Rangers - Mets pace the rest of the way would need to be 53/12 = 4.42 minutes per out.  Played over nine innings, that pace would make a game just about four hours long.  Therefore, I conclude that a completed bridge is unlikely.  If it were to happen it would probably mean someone was playing extras.  Still, there is plenty of early ball and I'm happy.  The way Bud Black is is mixing and matching out of his four-lefty bullpen, this game'll go another half-hour itself, easy.

Baseball Bridge

Cody Allen allowed a single to Carlos González.  Jonathan Lucroy then cranked an RBI double into the gap that Zimmer didn't play so well and González has scored.  Jacobs Field is stunned, this game is tied.  Allen is out of the inning but this game goes to the bottom of the ninth "squared up at two".

The bridge attempt is not yet begun because the Rangers and Mets are not yet over.  But Rockies - Indians is now headed into extras and I'm looking at the specs for a Draw Bridge.

Alex Claudio struck out a pair and the Mets are retired.  Rockies - Indians is bridging, Mariners - A's is 14 minutes away.  Shaw works to Arenado, Shaw fans Arenado.  To the bottom of the tenth.

To the 11th.  Estévez was on for Colorado.  He threw one up around Edwin's head and Edwin was not happy about it.

It is 14:37 central daylight.  Traffic can proceed over the river.  Mariners at A's are begun, bridge complete, baseball for hours.

Trout Fishing in Missouri

I'm keeping Rox - Indians on the audio (which I am streaming via iPod on a Bluetooth speaker) but I put Orioles at Angels on the MLB.TV.  I'm a go Trout fishing on a Wednesday afternoon in Missouri.

Gausman fans Revere.  Here's Mike Trout.  Strike one, over and out.  Strike two, in, a little low.  Trout is in the hole.  85 in the dirt, away.  Trout spoils a good 86-mph offering, over and low.  Was that a change?  [Ed. note: Probably a splitter.]  96, a little in.  A ball.  The count is full.  96, checked.  That looked like strike three but Fox Trax had it in, maybe this camera angle is a little deceiving.  I have lost the iPod audio feed.  Simba at bat.  Trout working a lead at first, oven-mitted.  93 away, the count even at one.  92 in, Gausman is at 16 pitches with one out.  A foul.  Simmons lines one to Gausman, Trout is not quite sure where he wants to go and more or less freezes, 1-3 DP.

Blackmon homered in the top of the 12th.  Chatwood earned his second career save.  Rockies 3, Indians 2.

Madison Bumgarner Returns

A little later.  I am hoping to get some older entries typed up.  But there are day games at hand.  I heard a Trout infield single.  On a 3-and-2 pitch to Simmons, Trout ran, Simmons swung and missed, Trout slid feet first and was out.  Now I've got Cubs at Giants, a tied game in the seventh.  It's Bumgarner's return to these pages.  Jay, 4-3.

Later.  Red Sox at Rays.

Odorizzi took a liner off his ankle and left.  The southpaw Dan Jennings is on in relief.  He has a spasmodic, unique burst of a delivery but he's struggled since being traded from the White Sox to the Rays.  The bases are loaded, no one is out, Moreland bats.  Wild pitch, Boston scores, it's 3-0.  Ramos could've had that ball—yeah, it's already been changed to a passed ball.  Moreland, 6-4.  Cash walks Bogaerts.  A sinker short-hops Ramos, that one is a wild pitch, Ramos can't find it, 4-0 Boston.  This inning has become a real cluster for Tampa.  A Sandy Leon single plates two more, it's 6-0 Boston.

Baseball spinner.  To Washington D.C....

Hunter Cervenka is on the mound for Miami.  "He's kind of thick."  He is a hard-throwing lefty but I'm not sure he's throwing enough strikes.  This broadcast seems to be silent.

Peach sighting!

B says Dusty was eating some kind of pitted fruit.  We hear the stadium's ambient noise but no broadcast call.  "Here's your little boy toy, Bryce Harper."  I had forgotten about opting for the ballpark noise only in the audio selection phase of queueing a game up.  I did that a lot last year and then completely forgot about it.  From one cluster to another tonight, as Cervenka can't throw a strike.  He's throwing hard, down and away, repeatedly.  Swinging 3-0, Harper lifts a ball to left.  It'll get a run home.  6-1 Nationals.  Cervenka is done.

To Comiskey.

Altuve socks a double to right center.  I believe he already led the AL in total bases but there's a couple more.  Except he seemed to be grimacing off second after that hit.  Maybe it's nothing.  Reddick flew out behind second base.  Gurriel, 4-3.

Baseball Amanuensis

A little later.  I'm about done.  It's 20:43 central daylight.  I'd like to get back to reading before too long.  I don't myself understand why I keep logging these entries.  Jose Martinez takes Scott Alexander deep, putting STL up 4-3 over KC.  The four-game I-70 Series has resumed its second half tonight in St Louis.  No one is reading this.  I'm not certain I'll ever go back and read this stuff myself.  It's not art.  All I'm doing is serving as a Baseball Amanuensis.  Fowler singles.  There are a bunch of games going—nine.  The Slate's final entrant, Dodgers at Diamondbacks, doubling as tonight's HotCut, has begun.  But I am ended.
