September 17: On The Highway, Headed Home.

We are on the highway, headed south, closing in on Springfield—Illinois.

Orioles at Yankees

We had Bookman on, Orioles at Yankees, but I went to switch the audio feed from aux cord to USB input for the better sound quality.  As I reinitiated the stream it defaulted to John Sterling, so we'll let him take it from here.  It's 12:15 on Sunday.  Our long road trip is just about over.

Suzyn does a scoreboard, noting Frankie Lindor's 31st home run.  Cleveland clinched the AL Central last night.

Armbruster:  Tents Make Sense

Austin Hays drives in a run on a hanger from Sonny Gray.  We pass the tentmaker just south of Springfield.  It used to be called Armbruster.  I thought I saw that name on a sign out in front of the building there, away from the highway, but I couldn't be sure.  There were three large tarp-covered structures facing the highway, each bearing one of three words:  "Tents Make Sense".  A little south of there, a sign for a turnoff to go visit a covered bridge.

Yes, In-Didi!
Didi goes deep, to right center, the Yankees have tied it at one.  Didi has 24 home runs, tying Jeter's Yankee shortstop record.

Cardinals at Cubs will start in 20 minutes.

Wienermobile No. 2

There goes the second Wienermobile we have seen today.  According to the Wienermobile wiki:

"Drivers of the Wienermobiles are known as Hotdoggers and often hand out toy whistles shaped as replicas of the Wienermobile, known as Wienerwhistles."

It seems that Oscar Mayer is based in Madison, WI so it is not surprising that, having departed Madison ourselves today we would see Wienermobiles heading in the direction opposite ours.

We hit a bump and lost the Yankees feed.

The phone must've thought I was doing "shake to shuffle" and took us to Rays at Red Sox.  I unplugged the USB cord, re-inserted it and opted instead for Blue Jays at Twins.  In no time, Josh Donaldson had touched Kyle Gibson for a mammoth home run.  Minnesota has a one-game lead on Anaheim for the AL's second Wild Card slot.

Kyle Gibson issues his fourth walk of this the first inning, 2-0 Jays.  The Cards - Cubs game should've started.  I'm headed there, on AM.

Back Home

I put the game on, KMOX.  Fowler hit a three-run shot to tie the game.  That was off of Quintana.  Bowman is on now.  He got a fielder's choice, but not the full double.

Marp Leaves Them Loaded

To the bottom of the eighth, the Cubs lead 4-3.  Duensing fanned Carpenter.  I assume Davis will have the ninth.  The Cardinals face a sweep, an all-out collapse.

Trout Homered, I Missed It

I had the Angels on because they are on the precipice of the Wild Card (though they trail, though Minnesota won).  It was time for Hugo to eat but I realized we were seemingly out of the canned pumpkin we have been adding to his food.  I went downstairs and fished a can out of my cardboard doomsday box of sundry canned goods (plus peanut butter and bags of New Orleans-style beans and rice).

It had been Texas 4-1.  I sat back in my chair, there was a shot of the faux-hawked Trout crushing liquids in the dugout from a Gatorade cup.  The score was 4-2.  I put two and two together.  It's Matt Bush on the mound.  One out.  Andrus just went outfield-deep in the hole, slid, seemed to pause, realiZed it was Albert running, then bazooka joed one to first, Albert just barely beat the throw.  Now Albert is where he'd rather not be—on first base.

Diekman is Back

Jake Diekman will enter the game.  He missed all that time with ... ulcerative colitis?  It was some sort of intestinal malady, something serious.  He had surgery, endured a long stretch of down time, made his way back.  He is back on the mound, pitching important innings—a triumphant return.  This is now the seventh game for him this year, 5 1/3 IP.
